Reaching and Teaching Divergent Grandkids

Neurodivergent kids—I'm sure there are as many in your family as there are in mine—don’t grow in straight lines. Whether they’re navigating ADHD, giftedness, autism, anxiety, sensory differences, or a mix of all the above, they zig and zag their way through childhood. Sometimes they’re too loud. Sometimes they melt into tears over a simple “no.” They leap ahead in one area and struggle in another. They’ll talk your ear off one minute, and the next their entire day is summed up with, “It was good.” As grandparents, we often see these patterns more clearly because we’re one step removed from the daily grind.

Divergence takes many shapes, and making sense of it isn’t about the labels we assign. It’s about the language we choose—simple, human language that lets us show up with patience, compassion, and confidence.


What “Divergence” Really Means

Social Divergence

A socially divergent child might struggle with reading cues, taking turns, or navigating friendships. They may seem “too blunt,” “too shy,” or “too intense.” But in reality, many neurodivergent kids simply don’t notice the subtle signals most children pick up automatically—when a conversation is over, when someone is joking, or when a friend needs space.


Sometimes they talk too much about a favorite topic. Sometimes they talk too little because they’re afraid of saying the wrong thing. Sometimes they walk away because their brain needs a break. To adults, these behaviors can look like rudeness or defiance. To the child, they’re survival strategies.


Research shows that autistic children often display reduced spontaneous attention to social cues like gaze direction and facial expressions (Frazier et al., 2020), while children with ADHD may miss cues entirely due to attentional variability (Ros et al., 2021). This means they’re navigating social situations with missing information, which leads to faster social exhaustion and a greater sense of being “out of sync.” Missing these cues is linked to higher emotional distress in neurodivergent youth (Alkhalaf et al., 2022).


You’ve seen this with your own grandkids. A child misses a cue, reacts “wrong,” and adults jump to the conclusion that they’re spoiled or misbehaving. But here’s the truth: they don’t understand—not the way adults assume they do. When corrected, many divergent kids apologize immediately, not because they grasp the rule they missed, but because apologizing has been programmed into them as the “right” response. Adults see the apology and assume the lesson stuck. It didn’t. The cue is still invisible, so the behavior repeats.


It’s not a discipline issue. It’s a brain‑wiring issue. And this is exactly why divergent kids need adults—especially grandparents—who can slow down, explain gently, and help them connect the dots without shame.


Emotional Divergence

Emotionally divergent kids feel deeply—sometimes more deeply than their peers. Emotional regulation challenges are common in ADHD and autism, and research shows strong links between executive function difficulties and emotional dysregulation. This isn’t misbehavior. It’s a brain still learning how to steer the ship. These kids may go from calm to overwhelmed in seconds, not because they’re dramatic, but because their internal brakes and gas pedals develop on a different timeline.


Intellectual Divergence

Giftedness, ADHD, and autism can all create uneven intellectual profiles—brilliant in one area, struggling in another. Children with overlapping diagnoses (like ASD + ADHD) often show distinct cognitive patterns, including differences in working memory, processing speed, and behavioral regulation. Their minds may race ahead in creativity or logic while lagging in organization or follow‑through. Their brains aren’t broken. They’re wired differently—and beautifully.


Doing What’s Right Isn’t Always What’s Best

Why patience beats punishment

Traditional discipline—timeouts, lectures, consequences—often backfires with divergent kids. Their brains respond better to co‑regulation, modeling, and emotional safety than to reward/punishment systems. A 2026 mixed‑methods study found that when adults shift from controlling behavior to mentalizing (understanding the child’s inner world), children show better emotional regulation and engagement.

A calm voice teaches more than a raised one. A pause teaches more than a punishment. Curiosity (“What’s happening inside you right now?”) teaches more than correction.

Divergent kids don’t need us to “fix” them. They need us to help them train their brains—and that takes time, repetition, and a whole lot of grace.


Too Much Device Time is a No Brainer

Divergent brains are especially sensitive to overstimulation, and too much device time can intensify the very challenges they’re already working hard to manage. Excessive screen use is linked to higher emotional dysregulation, reduced attention control, and increased irritability in children with ADHD and autism (Rosen et al., 2021). Heavy device use can also interfere with the development of social cue recognition and face‑to‑face communication skills—areas where neurodivergent kids already struggle (Madigan et al., 2020). For these children, screens aren’t just distractions—they can become neurological overload.


You’re the MiMi, Not the Mom

…And That’s a Superpower


Grandparents hold a unique role: connection without constant correction. Parents carry the weight of daily structure—bedtimes, homework, meltdowns, appointments. MiMis get to be the soft place to land. And divergent kids desperately need one place where they are not judged, scolded, or shamed for the ways their brain works.


Your job is not to enforce every rule. Your job is to be the one who says: “You’re safe here.” “You’re not too much.” “Your brain is different, not wrong.” “I love how you think.”


This emotional refuge strengthens their resilience. Research shows that relational safety improves children’s emotional regulation and engagement (Morris et al., 2017; Cooke et al., 2020). Not everyone agrees with this approach, but, as a teacher, a mom, and a mimi, I always believed the old saying, "No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care." Love is not enabling - that's a whole different topic - not today.


In my opinion, you’re not “spoiling” them. You’re stabilizing them.

  • Their differences aren’t problems—they’re pathways.


And as their MiMi, you get to be the one who sees the whole child, not just the challenges.

You’re not enabling them; you're teaching them how to navigate the world, and you’re teaching them that they belong in it.
